In September 2007, a quiet show about a bunch of
science and tech geeks slowly became an overnight sensation. The Big Bang Theory premiered on CBS and was
a darling of the critics. The brilliant adult
humor was something that had not been seen on television in a long while.
The main characters, Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter,
are Ph.D. physicists at Caltech. They
share an apartment across the hall from Penny, an aspiring actress who spends
her days working as a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory. She is the polar opposite of his nerdy
neighbors, as she is not very intellectual and loves the things the guys do not-sports and wine. Yet over time, she and Leonard begin an on-again, off-again romance
that presently has them engaged to one another.

The two other main characters who debuted on the show’s
initial season are Raj Koothrapalli, an astrophysicist with a Ph.D like the others and Howard
Wolowitz, who is often ridiculed by Sheldon for “only” having his Master’s
Degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. These two are as socially awkward as Sheldon
and Leonard, and they antics permit viewers an inside view of the nerdy world
in which they live.
Unlike many shows who get long in the tooth after a few
seasons, The Big Bang Theory just keeps getting better and better, much like a
fine wine. With each passing year, we
get a glimpse of the deeper layers of each character. In addition, new characters were added seamlessly
and as the ensemble grew, so has the laughs.
As the show enters its eleventh season this
fall, people will want to dress as these lovable, quirky characters. Here are
ideas for you to discover as you create your own Big Bang Theory costumes.
