It didn’t start with a bang, but on September 24, 2007, a quirky little television show called The Big Bang Theory made it’s debut on CBS. Created by Chuck Lorre of Two and a Half Men fame and Bill Prady of Gillmore Girls, this series aimed both high and low.
At the high end was the intelligence of it’s lead characters. Three have doctorates in Physics and one has a Master’s Degree in Engineering from the prestigious from Massachusetts Institute of technology. The dialog the actors had to learn could trip almost any non-technical tongue.
At the low end were the jokes and innuendos of a sexual nature. Put these two things together and you had a spark that has now turned into a great big bang of a hit.
One of the lead characters is Leonard Hofstadter. His on again-off again romance with Penny, his aspiring actress/Cheesecake factory waitress neighbor across the hall is one of the reasons fans turn on the show. How can a hot chick like her go for a short, but cute, introverted nerd like Leonard? There is hope for geeks everywhere!
Because of his adorable dorkiness, a Leonard Hofstatder costume would make an adorable one this upcoming Halloween.
Fun Facts About Leonard
Leonard is the sane one in the apartment that he shares with his fellow physicist, Sheldon Cooper. Although he reluctantly signed it, he has to adhere to Sheldon’s quirky OCD rules in a document entitled “The Roommate Agreement”. He often puts Sheldon down in rebuttal to his excessive rules, but this is totally lost on Sheldon.
No matter what he does, Leonard cannot seem to please his mother, Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, who is a neuroscientist, psychiatrist and an award winning author. She continually speak well of his brother and sister, but Leonard can never measure up. His father, who is anthropologist, never paid much attention to Leonard, either.
Because his mother was not into birthdays, Leonard never celebrated his as a child. The same can be said for Christmas, Instead of gifts, the Hofstatder children had to write essays.
Like many geeks, Leonard is obsessed with comic books, Star Trek, Dungeons and Dragons, and just about every other nerd pastime. He has a host of physical ailments, including being lactose intolerant, asthmatic, gets motion sick and gets migraines.

Leonard is not the most fashion forward kind of guy. Unless it is a special occasion, he basically has a “uniform” look. He can almost always been seen wearing a green army jacket or brown jacket that has pockets in the front and zips up. Under that is his classic hoodie, followed by a third layer-a tee shirt.
His pants are brown and not tight fitting at all. He wears black Converse sneakers on his feet and of course, his classic black framed glasses due to his myopia.
If you are dressing like Leonard, you must slick back your hair with gel. That how he wears it…even though the 90’s are long gone.
